Have you been avoiding the dentist?  Are you scared, even terrified to schedule an appointment?

If so, you’re not alone.  It has been estimated that between 30-50% of the population avoid the dentist.   Some of these individuals have had traumatic experiences as a child, suffered pain as adults or been influenced by stereotypes in movies or horror stories from their parents.

It’s understandable that many stopped many stopped seeking routine dental care or fail to visit the dentist despite suffering with pain when eating or from embarrassment from their smiles
If this sounds like you or anyone you know, then we’d love to help.

It’s time to rest easy. Sedation Dentistry is here!

Sedation dentistry creates a relaxing and anxiety-free experience for you.

  • You’ll find your treatment is performed more comfortably that you ever thought possible
  • It often allows your dentist to accomplish more dental work in a single visit, meaning fewer appointments to complete your treatment
  • Due to the amnesiac properties of many of the medications used, and you will often have little or no memory of the time in the dental chair by the next day
  • Our specially trained sedation dentistry team will monitor you continuously throughout your appointment including blood pressure and pulse oximetry.

What types of sedatives are available?

There are different types of sedatives that suit different levels of anxiety and sedation required, and will be influenced by the type and extent of treatment being done.

NITROUS OXIDE

Commonly called “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide elevates general mood and evokes  a general sense of well-being.  It is used as a mild sedative to relieve anxiety.

It works very rapidly with effects within 20 seconds, can be switched on and off as needed, and is eliminated within minutes after supply is stopped, meaning you can drive home without an escort.

Nitrous has been used safely in dentistry for many years, and is also safe and effective with children.

ORAL SEDATION

Oral sedation uses anti-anxiety medication or pills prior to treatment to reduce anxiety and make you feel calm.  You will feel drowsy and sleepy.

The medications used are usually benzodiazepines that are widely used to help with anxiety or sleep.

INTRAVENOUS SEDATION

The sedative drug is administered into the blood system during treatment inducing a deep state of relaxation and feeling of not being bothered by what’s going on.

It is commonly mistaken for sleep dentistry, however the aim is not to induce sleep.   Patients remain conscious and responsive to verbal requests, although sleepiness may be a side effect. Patients often report that they feel like that slept through the entire procedure.

As with oral sedation, hours turn into minutes, and there is often little or no memory of treatment the following day.
